Bone Broth Recipe by Nutritionist Sharisse Dalby

Have you ever heard of bone broth?

You may be slightly confused over this health fad, or you may already be enjoying it on the regular.

But, with all this talk about gut-health, I thought it was important for me to enlighten you on this gut nourishing food – and of course, give you a recipe too!

What is bone broth?

Bone broth is a highly nutritious stock that is made by soaking animal bones in vinegar and then simmering them to release their minerals, collagen, and connective tissues.

It can be used as a drink or as a base for soups, etc.

What are the health benefits?

Bone broth is a nutrient-dense food – meaning it offers lots of nutrients compared to it’s caloric content.

In reality, it’s dense in the nutrients that you’re probably running low on and may even be purchasing in supplemental form.

Some of the nutrients it contains are:

  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Selenium
  • Boron
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K2
  • Omega 3’s

It also provides a good solid punch of glucosamine and chondroitin, which are really beneficial for joint care and arthritic support.

And let’s not forget the high dose of glycine and amino acids through the gelatin it contains (helpful for injury recovery).

Bone broth is also a great source of protein. In fact, one cup of beef broth can contain upwards of 25g of protein for only 200 calories. Woah.

To put it simply – it’s full of good stuff that your body craves.

How does it benefit me?

In particular, bone broth is excellent for your gut health as it aids in healing the lining of your gut which can help reduce digestive symptoms, decrease food allergies, and encourage proper balance of gut bacteria.

It has anti-inflammatory properties which helps with gut repair and recovery from sports or other injuries, and helps relieve pain from inflammatory disorders.

It also boosts the immune system, increases bone strength, and nourishes the hair, skin, and nails.

And, consuming it before bed helps with a better sleep and better brain function. Bonus!

Is it a fad or the real deal?

The fact is, bone broth is uber nutritious and super beneficial to the gut and I highly recommend consuming it on a fairly regular basis.

It can be made with bones from any animal and can help supply your body with some of the nutrients it craves in a super nutrient dense way.

It’s an absolute win-win.

So whether you struggle with gut issues, joint pain, inflammation, bone issues, or even weight maintenance – you need to add this Gut-Nourishing Bone Broth your meal plan this week.
