If getting your kids to eat healthy is the bane of your existence, then you are in the right place.

Now before I get into the good stuff and tell you how you’re sabotaging their health (and what you can do about it), let’s establish right off the bat that …

Fruit loops are not a food group …

And you’re a rockin’ mom, don’t you forget it.

3 Ways You Sabotage Your Kids Healthy Eating and What You Can Do About It!

Here are three ways you sabotage your kids healthy eating …

1. You don’t feed them foods they don’t like

This one sounds a little odd, doesn’t it? But I assure you – I’m being totally serious.

When you only feed your kids foods they like, you rob them of the chance to try something new, develop new taste buds, and overcome the fear of new textures, tastes, and smells.

Do your kids a favour – introduce the foods they don’t like into their diet on a weekly basis.

2. You give them other food when they don’t eat what you’ve served

This is a huge no-no. Like, huge.

If your kid doesn’t want to eat what’s been served, no problem … but don’t serve them something else! They can sit and hang out with the fam at the table, but don’t serve them something else until the next meal.

The steps you take now create their future health and habits. Think it through!

3. You gave up trying, so you’ll buy them whatever they’ll eat – even junk!

Please … don’t even.

If I get one regular comment from patients it’s this: “The only thing my kid will eat is _____ (ie fruit loops).”.

Ahem.

Why are you buying them fruit loops then? If you know there is a problem with what they’re eating, don’t buy it for them!

Yes, it may be the only thing they’re willing to eat, but that doesn’t mean you should buy it for them. 

Besides, taste buds die every 10 days anyways – so give it a couple of weeks and they’ll be just fine. 

Their health depends on you continuously introducing them to healthy foods to develop the right taste buds and habits. Stop buying them junk!

Okay, we’ve established how you sabotage their health, so what exactly should you do instead?

1. Feed them a variety of foods

Start feeding them the foods they don’t like on a more regular basis.

But here’s the catch…

You have to try making it different ways! If they don’t like raw broccoli – try giving it to them lightly steamed, grilled, roasted, etc. Don’t give up, keep trying!

Try at least 3 times in 10 days, then take a week off and try the cycle again.

2. Don’t give in and make them something else – they’re fine!

Oh yeah, it’s gettin’ real up in here.

You have to stop making them other food, separate meals or giving them extra snacks if they choose to skip a meal.

Listen, it’s their choice to politely decline a meal, there’s nothing wrong with that. But they should be requested to stay at the table and hang out with the family and should not be made a separate meal of choice or given a snack in between normal meals just because they’re hungry.

They’re fine and can wait until the next meal, period.

3. Don’t buy the junk … seriously.

If you’re wondering why your kid will only eat crap, this would be it.

If you want your kids to stop eating crap then you have to stop buying it for them. At the end of the day – you’re in charge of what comes home from the grocery store.
