You don’t need me to tell you that natural skincare is best, you already know that.
But understanding why can help you turn your knowledge into action, so that you can confidently change your skincare routine to use healthier, more natural products.
Improving your health involves more than just food. How you care for your skin, including what you put on it, impacts your overall health too – because your skin is your body’s largest organ.
You’ve been asking for me to break down natural skincare for awhile now, so I decided to enlist the help of an expert in this field, holistic facialist Emmaline Tsui.
So, what are the 5 things you should know about natural skincare according to our skincare expert? Let’s find out!

In my opinion, natural is always best. However, did you know these 5 things about natural skincare?
#1 Oils Will Not Always Cause Breakouts
As a lot of natural products are oil based, it can be a worry for some that oils will cause further breakouts on the skin.
As a facialist who specializes in natural skincare, it is important to note that it is only the ‘bad’ oils that will block your pores. In fact, some oils can actually help with breakouts. Look out for rosehip and jojoba oils and avoid the heavier ones such as avocado and coconut which can lead to pimples and clogged pores.
#2 Coconut Oil Is Great For Your Body But Not For Your Face
Leading on from the point above, I thought it was important to mention that although there is so much buzz around coconut oil as an amazing moisturizer, keep it to the body only.
The only time I would use it on the face is to remove makeup, but then be sure to remove the oil afterwards. Coconut oil can be very comedogenic and can cause blocked pores on the face.
#3 Essential Oils Are Not Always Essential
Never underestimate the power of vegetable oils in skincare. Yes, it is lovely to have a beautiful smelling blend from using essential oils (plus they do have a fantastic impact on the skin too), however carrier oils can be just as effective on the skin by themselves!
#4 Natural Products Can Save You Money
Of course it can be easier to just buy a product off the shelf, but it’s also fun to blend your own products too.
Create a face mask with some yogurt and honey (like the recipe below), or a hair oil with argan and coconut oil. You can get quite creative with some simple ingredients, just make sure you know how to blend essential oils correctly (if you’re using them) and always patch test a product first if you are a bit unsure.
#5 Just Because It’s Natural, Doesn’t Mean You Won’t React
We can be led to believe that all natural products are safe and good for us. Now, don’t get me wrong a lot of the time they are, but I always recommend doing a patch test on products if you have sensitive skin.
Think about nuts for example, to one person they can be fine, but to somebody else they could be fatal!
Try this simple at-home face mask recipe to learn how simple holistic skincare can be. Please remember to do a patch test on your skin first to make sure you do not have a sensitivity to any of the ingredients listed.
